Memories of You

The letter came by post "The first Friday in June"

Thinking this day had come around too soon
The letter box an unexpected sound".
A government letter falling to the ground

There wasn’t too much time to take it all in
My loves lost journey about to begin
Our time had run out , now feeling alone
Trying to hold back a tear, chilled to the bone

Remembering that day and looking back
To when the train left me staring down the track

The long train pulled slowly out of the station
He was proud to be fighting for his nation
All I could feel was my heart breaking
Feeling lonely with the trains light fading

It was so hard to watch my love disappear
Watching the train, I whispered a prayer
Hoping it was heard somewhere above
End this war and bring back my love

But war took my love from our hometown
I will sleep tonight in his dressing gown
I hold his picture, kiss his face
The silver frame cannot replace his grace

The train was boarded from the cold platform
Hugging each other , trying to keep warm
All I could feel was my heart breaking
But my loves light would never be fading

As I now look through our wooden chest
Fond memories of you and I are blessed
My love went to war and in God we trust
Now hopes and prayers have faded to dust

Tears continue as I remember that train
It took you away to a distant terrain
I hear a faint whistle blowing down the track
And the sound of your voice " I'll be right back"

So now today I know our fate
The trains been cancelled or running late
No sound of the whistle blowing down the track
Just the silent echo of you never coming back

That war took my love from our hometown
I will sleep tonight in his dressing gown
I hold his picture, kiss his face
The silver frame cannot replace his grace
